I’ve been working on a children’s story about Chicago in the 1800s. My wonderful writing friends and mentors having been helping me revise the manuscript. Why is it that they can see the revisions so much quicker than me? It seems to work that way for most writers. This story has morphed and changed so many times, it’s making my head spin. So…

I put the manuscript in my virtual filing drawer for a few weeks before coming back to it. Now I can see some changes I need to make. After several more weeks of work, the deadline for submitting this manuscript for a conference critique is almost here. Today, I am happy to say that the manuscript went in the mail! Now I will patiently wait for the conference and critique. In the meantime, I’ll visit my virtual drawer and see what else needs revising.

It’s been a month since I made 10 varieties of holiday cookies. They were polished off long ago, but their remnants still remain. Where, you ask? On my hips! That’s not the only thing lingering. How about that sweet tooth that was nourished for a month (or two) during the holidays. I can ban cookies from my house, but how do I ban my sweet tooth? Once it gets ramped up it’s hard to calm down.

My plan for January? Cook simply (no rich foods) and eat lots of fruits and vegetables. In other words, eat like a rabbit. I’ll keep busy with my writing, quilting, and puppy raising and hope it keeps me from snacking. I know I’ll have lots of company because January is “diet month” for most Americans.

It’s that time of year that I relish – cookie-making season — and truffles thrown in for good measure. Each year I sort through a long list of potential cookies that I can make and give to family and friends. It’s become a tradition they look forward to, so I choose my cookies very carefully. With shipping involved and some of the boxes not being opened for a week, the goodies can’t overwhelm the box (like mint and lemon do) and can’t be crumbly (mint meltaways or melting moments). Those pungent little delights are saved for friends who live locally. I’ve learned over the years that it’s not easy having cookies survive a cross-country trek.

The “winners” this year will be butter cookies, chocolate raspberry bars, cherry bonbons, butterscotch bars, sweet chocolate smiles, and many other varieties. All hardy enough to survive some shuffling and potentially being dropped. The icing on the cake will be the cherry, lemon, and blackberry truffles – three varieties chosen by request of the recipients.

This project will be days in the making but well worth it. After all, what could be more fun for a cookie lover than making 10 varieties. Time to get started!

What a great puppy meeting Brianne had tonight. We practiced the “Go to Bed” command. Some of the dogs didn’t know what to do because they hadn’t been trained. Others performed well. Brianne did an excellent job on the command, especially considering all the distractions around her – people, smells, and about a dozen other dogs. She performed better than dogs her age and some that were older. Tonight, she was a star! She deserves mega hugs tonight.

Sometimes things don’t go quite as planned. I worked day in and day out for weeks to try and complete my Halloween quilt by early October. As I was close to finishing the top, I discovered that the quilt store was out of the backing material. How frustrating! I was on such a roll and so anxious to hang this beauty. Now, the top sits on a chair in my guest bedroom. Much to my surprise, the fabric company has no intention of printing more candy corn fabric until November. Really? What were they thinking when they made that decision? If only I could read their minds. For now, I will patiently wait because the backing fabric is too darn cute to pass on. Not to mention that it matches the front.

Quilting is one of my favorite creative endeavors. Combine it with my love of holidays, and now you understand why I’m making a Halloween quilt. It’s called Sew Spooky and is the cutest pattern I’ve ever seen. The hundreds of little pieces I had to cut out took me six days. I probably could have done all the cutting in half that time if I wasn’t training a puppy, but what fun would that be.

It’s only a few weeks until I hang my orange and black decorations, so I’m furiously sewing. This is a quilt that will be hung and admired rather than used. Will I be done in time? Let’s hope so, or I’ll have to wait a whole year to enjoy this Halloween treat.

Exploring and learning about her new world must be exhausting. She can’t pass a flower, a shrub, or even a piece of bark on the ground without checking it out. Today she discovered grass; for rolling in and eating. She didn’t grab a few blades to sample. No, Brianne pulled out an entire chunk of lawn. Whatever she sets her mind to, she does it with gusto. That’s my girl. There is no halfway.

Raising a puppy is like having a baby in the house. Sleeping through the night? Not possible. Time to take a shower without interruption? Ha! A peaceful dinner? What’s that. But… puppies are so much fun! When Brianne runs around the kitchen and family room she looks like an uncoordinated kangaroo. She bounces and leaps and lands in unexpected positions. It’s hysterical watching her explore the house and find her legs. Everything, and I mean everything, goes in her mouth. Especially all of her body parts. Doesn’t it hurt to chew on your paws and thigh?

When Brianne isn’t exploring, she loves to nap. Out like a baby, but she perks right up when my bichon jumps on my lap. With Brianne, she can never get too much attention. She loves cuddles, body massages, and hugs. This is an “all about me” dog!

Puppy pick-up time. The day has finally arrived. Soooo exciting!!!!

I asked my husband to join me on the ride to Guide Dogs for the Blind. It took us almost an hour on the road because of the exceptionally bad traffic. With the bumper-to-bumper crawl down the highway, I was beginning to wonder if we’d arrive before the facility closed. After a long wait, the woman on duty brought out Brianne, a labrador/golden retriever cross. Brianne was adorable but very tired, as if woken from her nap. I don’t know how much she weighed, but my husband described her as a “sack of potatoes.” Was he ever right! I couldn’t hold her for very long and passed Brianne back to him. She proceeded to throw up in the car on the way home, and when she “woke up” at our house, she proceeded to chew on anything and everything! A challenge right from day one, but I’m happy to have her.

I’m a big-time dog lover. What would it be like to raise a guide dog? I’m about to find out. Attending Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) meetings for months has been eye-opening and incredibly educational for me. It has also confirmed my desire to be a puppy raiser. But first, I’m required to puppy sit for a few days and nights so I get a true feel for what this “adventure” entails.

Yesterday I picked up Braxton, a beautiful, six-month-old labrador retriever for my puppy sit. When I got him home he was a bit of a rascal. I didn’t know the newspaper could taste so good, or that pencil on the counter. He was golden when I had him out-and-about to the restaurant, the grocery store, and the library while I tutored. All in all, the puppy sit went well. I can’t wait to get my own puppy!
